Winchester, Va. -- State and local officials gathered to witness history in the making on Friday, April 19th at groundbreaking ceremonies held for two new high schools in Hardy County, West Virginia.

With careful planning by the design and construction team, the additions and renovations will be constructed while each school is in normal use.

For the East Hardy High School in Baker, the plan calls for major renovations to the existing structure, including structural, roof, and facade repairs. The school will be expanded by 34,000 SF; the addition includes an auxiliary gymnasium, auditorium, media center, band room, and classrooms. Construction cost is estimated at $17,600,000.

The oldest section of Moorefield High School, opened in 1941, will be demolished and a new state-of-the art facility will be built. Approximately 21,000 SF will be renovated (including the existing gym, kitchen, science classrooms, and a vocational/agriculture building). Nearly 80,000 SF of new construction will add an auxiliary gymnasium, auditorium, media center, band room, and classrooms. Construction cost is estimated at $21,200,000. The cafeterias are being renovated and expanded at both schools.

Howard Shockey & Sons, Inc. of Winchester, Virginia, is the construction manager. Williamson Shriver Architects, Inc. of Charleston, West Virginia, is the architect.

"We are honored to be part of such a significant project for Hardy County," said Jeff Boehm, Vice President with Howard Shockey & Sons. “In the next two years, these schools will be transformed into models of modern learning, equipped with 21st century technology.”

Construction is expected to begin this summer and is anticipated to last approximately 24 months. Funding for the projects comes from the citizens of Hardy County and the West Virginia School Building Authority. “We are excited about what the future holds for Hardy County,” said Board of Education President Margaret Shriver.
