Shockey Named Among Top Firms | Winchester Star

WINCHESTER, Va. — Howard Shockey & Sons Inc. has been named among the top contractors revenue-wise in the Mid-Atlantic by the Engineering News Record. The Frederick County firm was ranked No. 15 on the trade publication’s list of top Virginia contractors, No. 28 among general building contractors and No. 33 among top contractors in the Mid-Atlantic, according a news release from the company.

“We attribute [it] to the good work our employees do, because we really rely on repeat business for most of our business, and that is what leads us onto [the lists],” said Shockey President Jeff Boehm. He said Shockey has appeared in the magazine’s lists before.

The company’s revenues grew “solidly” as the country recovered from the recession, the release states. “Boehm reports that Shockey plans to continue growing its geographic boundaries, especially in the Richmond and Roanoke metro areas, and anticipates expansion into key market sectors throughout the region,” it states.

Shockey marketing coordinator Karen Butler said Wednesday that the company had revenue of about $134 million last year.

It recently finished the $82 million Village at Orchard Ridge, a retirement and assisted living community west of Winchester. Boehm said Shockey is adding a dining facility at the community, as well as 16 new cottages.

“We’re currently building throughout the mid-Atlantic area in Maryland and Virginia and in West Virginia, and we have a number of projects going on in each of those states,” he added.

Last year, Shockey started work on a $50 million processing plant in Augusta County for dairy company Shamrock Farms, based in Arizona, according to the release.

Shockey also built the $19 million Health and Life Sciences Building that recently opened at Shenandoah University.

Boehm said Shockey has 135 employees and continues to hire.
